A deceptively simple worksheet for younger French Immersion and Core French students

This fall, I’ve been using this colouring worksheet with some of my younger Core French and French Immersion learners here in North Vancouver.

A colouring sheet with les couleurs de l’automne, used during private French tutoring sessions with French Immersion and Core French learners in North Vancouver.

It’s easy to look at this and notice that it will help students with learning or reviewing the colours.

But as an educator, I know that this colouring worksheet is also helping younger French Immersion and Core French learners with:

  • Grammatical gender

  • Recognizing masculine and feminine articles

  • Noun-adjective agreement

  • New vocabulary like “foulard”

  • Pronunciation of tricky vowel combinations, like “ouille,” “ou,” “euille,” and “ui”

As an experienced teacher, I design learning materials with the maximum possible benefit in mind — I see the connections between one topic (colours vocabulary) and others (like noun-adjective agreement).

A deep dive into grammar rules isn’t always necessary or developmentally appropriate for younger students. But activities like this one are a form of “implicit learning” that helps solidify knowledge of these core topics through repetition and pattern recognition, taking advantage of the unique critical period of brain development they are in.

As students get older and learn more abstract and critical thinking skills, we work on more “explicit learning” activities that help them gain a deeper and more structured understanding of ideas like grammatical gender and the grammatical function of singular and plural articles.
