Textbook recommendations

  • Cengage “Horizons” introductory French by Manley, Smith, McMinn-Reyna, & Prévost. (Most recent edition available via Cengage site, past editions available via resellers.) This is an excellent textbook that covers grammar and vocabulary from total beginner to advanced.

  • L’art de conjuguer from Bescherelle. The classic “verb dictionary” that can teach you how to conjugate any verb into any tense (présent, conditionnel passé, subjonctif…) Ask your local independent bookstore to order in a copy for you, or find a used copy available online via resellers.

  • I also recommend going to your local library and asking them to direct you to any French-language resources they have, including workbooks, textbooks, children’s books, novels and non-fiction, French language magazines, French language films, etc. If they don’t have much at your library, ask your librarian about what is available to you through interlibrary loan.
