Bonjour ! Parlez-vous français ?

Private French Lessons for K-12 students in French Immersion and Core French

Learning French is a powerful tool that can unlock improved literacy, stronger critical thinking, cross-cultural communication skills, and fulfilling professional opportunities throughout Canada, Europe, and around the world.

Private French lessons can help your child…

  • Improve their grades

  • Feel more confident speaking French

  • Learn effective study skills

  • Address knowledge gaps in grammar and vocabulary

  • Develop stronger critical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Become a more effective communicator

  • Explore advanced topics for enrichment

Cecile was our first teacher outside the classroom. She has been amazing! The initial anxiety didn't last as she was very kind and approachable. She addressed our child's learning needs based on their learning style, what they wanted to work on, and what they needed help with. As a parent, I have appreciated the detailed summaries after each session. I would highly recommend Cecile. We look forward to resuming sessions.

— Rosanne, parent of Aydin, grade 9 French Immersion student

Learning French through private lessons means that your child will benefit from:

  • A tailored approach based on your child’s learning style, needs, and interests: If they're a Swiftie, we can read a fun article from a French-language tween magazine. If they're terrified of speaking French and participating in class, we can slowly build up their self-confidence. If they love legos, you can bring their legos to the lesson and we'll use the blocks to practice colours… and so on.

  • Lots of opportunities to practice speaking: Unlike in a large group setting, your child will be able to speak lots of French in each 1 hour lesson, helping them learn the correct pronunciation more quickly.

  • Focused 1:1 attention: Your child will get undivided attention and personalized feedback from an experienced educator, who can answer their specific questions about vocabulary, grammar, and more. I can quickly correct their mistakes before they become bad habits (but I also believe every ‘mistake’ is just a learning opportunity!) and I will be there to help them celebrate the progress that they’ll make each and every session!

Meet the French teacher

Bonjour ! Je m’appelle Cecile. I have multiple years of experience tutoring North Vancouver and West Vancouver students in French Immersion and Core French, both as an Independent Teacher and as a former Tutor at a well-known, nationally recognized tutoring franchise. I’ve worked with students of all ages and abilities, who needed help with their homework, writing essays, preparing for oral presentations, and studying for quizzes and tests

Prior to moving to North Van in 2018, I worked at a Lycée (secondary school, equivalent to Canadian grades 10-12) in southeastern France. In Canada, I have also done work in instructional design, curriculum development, facilitation, and previously served as an Education Advisor to the British Columbia Office of the Human Rights Commissioner.

I am passionate about language acquisition and love seeing my students learn, grow, and progress. You can learn more about me here!

Our son was struggling in French immersion and Cecile was able to turn things around! His teacher has noticed that he is speaking up more in class and his grades have improved. Cecile is very thoughtful and we would recommend her to any parents/families.

— Marie, parent of Adam, grade 5 French Immersion student

Private French lessons could be a good fit for your child and family if…

  • They need help working on their speaking, grammar, writing, or reading comprehension

  • You want them to learn more effective study skills

  • They’re in French Immersion or Core French and their homework is starting to become too difficult for you to assist with

  • They are getting reading for post-secondary and interested in pursuing a career in the Canadian civil service after their degree

  • The quality of your child’s in-classroom French instruction is suffering due to BC’s French teacher shortage

  • They could benefit from improved confidence, discipline and mental resilience, new perspectives on different cultures, improved communication skills, and learning the value of consistent effort over time

Our lessons are designed to inspire curiosity, a love of learning, and promote durable French language skills that will stand the test of time.

Your child will learn:

  • Vocabulary: Improve vocabulary knowledge through conversation, reading, and listening practice.

  • Grammar: Introduce and reinforce fundamental grammar concepts from basic present tense conjugations to advanced topics like the “ne explétif.” (No, not swear words — this is a formal, nearly exclusively written grammatical construction, used with certain subjunctive forms and/or to add emphasis.)

  • Reading comprehension: Reading age-appropriate short or long texts about relevant subjects, like a picture book about their favourite animal, a short story, or an academic text about history or science.

  • Writing: Work on the micro and macro skills of writing in French, from correct spelling and comma usage to structuring paragraphs and essays around a central thesis.

  • Verbal expression and pronunciation practice: Your child will benefit from many opportunities to speak and express themselves in French in each 1 hour session, with immediate feedback on how to improve their grammar and pronunciation.

  • Listening comprehension: Give your child the opportunity to hear a different speaker than their classroom teacher and classmates, and (if desired) receive personalized recommendations of content (TV shows, documentaries, podcasts, and music) that they can enjoy on their own, or that you can work on as a family.

  • Cultural Awareness: Explore the rich cultural diversity of La Francophonie through learning about different holidays, literary traditions, music, and more.

Cecile is great at what she does. She is a good teacher who takes her work seriously but is also patient and kind.

— Alex, grade 11 French Immersion student

How it works:

  1. Getting to know each other: I take the time to learn about you/your child’s goals and current strengths and weaknesses. For the first lesson or two, we focus on building rapport and trust. Depending on your reasons for seeking private lessons, I may ask to review recent quizzes/tests and report card notes from your classroom teacher.

  2. Customized Lessons: I design personalized lesson plans that cater to your child’s needs and interests.

  3. Tailored Sessions: Each lesson is filled with activities designed to meet your child’s unique needs, whether that is building up their confidence in speaking or working to address gaps in grammar knowledge.

  4. Checking In: I ask you and your child for feedback, and strive to continually improve your child’s learning experience as we work together.

  5. Parental Involvement: Stay informed about your child’s progress with emails after each session, and (if desired) suggestions on how to support their learning at home.

We offer single lessons (book as-needed), and bundles of 5, 10, and 15 lessons.

Each lesson is 1 hour long, and lessons must be completed within 6 months of purchase date.

Lessons are available in-person in the Lonsdale neighbourhood of North Vancouver
